Trespass Enforcement

If you are encountering trespassing issues on your property, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office offers a “Trespassing Enforcement Authorization Letter” that allows deputies to respond to your property and address trespass complaints without you needing to be present every time.

By filling out the request form (PDF), the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office is able to act, in the absence of the owner, for purposes of enforcing laws against any person found on private property without the owner's consent or lawful purpose.

This is an extremely useful tool and is strongly recommended for vacant properties, vacant lots, businesses or any properties upon which public nuisance activity and/or crime problems, including transient activity, drug activity, graffiti, or general trespass, are occurring.

Signage

Trespassing signage should be prominently displayed, easy to read, and placed at property entrances and boundaries to serve as legal notice. Signage should clearly state “No Trespassing” or “Private Property”.

Renewal

The California Penal Code allows for a Trespassing Authorization Enforcement Letter to remain in effect for up to 12 months. It will be the responsibility of the property owner or agent to update the letter if services are requested beyond the expiration date.
