
Sworn deputy sheriffs staff the Patrol Division, which falls under the Operations Bureau. Patrol Deputies maintain order and protect life and property by enforcing local, State, or Federal laws and ordinances while performing a combination of the following duties: patrol a specific area; direct traffic; issue traffic summonses; investigate incidents and crimes; apprehend and arrest suspects; educate the public on crime prevention, or serve legal processes of the courts.
The Sheriff’s Patrol Division provides a full range of law enforcement and related emergency response services to an approximately 46,843-resident population (U.S. Census Bureau 2011) and an expanding number of visitors over an area of 1,037 square miles, including agricultural, industrial, residential, recreational, and undeveloped rural areas.
The Sheriff’s Patrol Division operates out of the headquarters in San Andreas and sub-stations within the county's local communities.
The Patrol Division is also responsible for supplemental law enforcement at many special events in Calaveras County and for working closely with individual community members and homeowners’ associations on crime prevention tactics and education.
