The Calaveras County Hazardous Materials Team (HAZMAT) Team is an interdisciplinary staffed team responsible for the response and management of chemical emergencies including clandestine drug laboratories, abandoned chemical wastes, and transportation incidents. The Team also assists local agencies with environmental site assessments and identification of chemical unknowns associated with environmental crimes and pollution cases. The Team maintains three (3) state certified hazardous materials instructors who provide first responder training. Staff training and certification is provided through the California Specialized Training Institute, San Luis Obispo, California.

Funded largely by state and federal program subsidies, the County HAZMAT Team covers a 5,000 square mile response area encompassing Calaveras, Tuolumne, and Alpine Counties.
